Whey Isolate and Whey Concentrate- Which is Better for you?

Whey Isolate and Whey Concentrate- Which is Better for you?

Someone once said that if a problem keeps coming up and you can't seem to figure out how to solve it, it's likely that you don't understand it well enough to know how to fix it.

Understanding the primary differences between the various varieties of whey protein and what their fundamental characteristics are would be the first piece of the jigsaw. And how does each one of them behave in the body differently?

PROTEIN
Whey is a liquid that separates from milk during cheese production. The protein part of whey is called whey protein. It is commonly used as a protein supplement. Whey protein is processed in three forms which are called Isolate, Hydrolysate and Concentrate. The main difference between these three different types of whey is the composition of fat and carbohydrates.

Isolate:

A highly filtered form of whey protein is called isolate. In general, whey protein contains a very small amount of lactose (less than 1%).  But whey protein isolate has almost no lactose because of the fine filtration process. Furthermore, compared to its relative whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate often contains less fat, cholesterol, calories, and carbs. It is therefore a fantastic choice for people who have an especially severe lactose allergy as well as those who want to keep their muscles while shedding fat. The highest quality whey protein isolates often have a protein concentration that is at least 90% higher than that of its concentrated version.

Concentrate:
Let’s move on to the next one. Whey protein concentrate is made by skimming and refining the casein and water in milk. It does, however, have some lactose, carbohydrates, and fats (approximately 20-30%). Thus, we can conclude that whey concentrate consists of 70–80% protein by weight. Although, due to the wide variety of products available, some companies may use a less pure version of whey concentrate—say, 40% whey protein concentrate—to cut costs. So, if you plan to purchase whey protein concentrate, make sure you check the if the product contains at least 70-80% of whey protein concentrate.

What is the difference between the two?

 Calories
As compare to whey protein concentrate, whey isolate tends to have low carbs, fat and lactose content as it is skimmed and filtered to the highest of levels which makes it viable to mix it with water for a high-quality protein shake. Now as it is with whey protein concentrate, it is still an efficient way to fulfill protein in your daily diet, but the fact is that it comes loaded with a few extra calories.

Therefore, whey isolate is a good option if you’re looking to build lean muscle mass.

Protein
Whey protein isolate is relevant for caloric restriction diets for weight loss as it has the protein content of around 90% and also has higher protein per serving or per gram as compared to whey protein concentrate. Whey isolate is also suitable for the lactose intolerant people.

Moving on to whey protein concentrate has a protein content of around 70-80% which is suitable to make you feel full for a longer period of time due to more carbs and fats as compared to whey isolate.

However, the difference between protein content is just a few grams, and it depends from brand-to-brand, i.e., if they are able to include more protein per serving than other brands.

 Which is best for you?
Despite the difference in processing methods and protein content, both whey concentrate and whey isolate are essentially similar.

First of all, an additional gram of carbs or fat in whey concentrate isn’t much of a concern for weight loss and might even assist you to lightly increase your calorie intake for your gain. Despite the fact that whey protein isolate is more concentrated, the average protein per serving is very similar.

Finally, if you're looking for a high-quality, cost-effective protein, I recommend whey protein concentrate. On the other hand, you can go for whey protein isolate if you’re looking for a premium protein supplement with less fat, carbs, and lactose.

However, the differences being what they are, you possibly can’t go wrong with either whey protein isolate or whey protein concentrate.
